The houseboats are moored at the edge of the historic Amsterdamse Bos, or forest. Planted as a make-work project in the 1930's the trees are now grown to glorious height. The old south area of Amsterdam dates from the 1920's when it was designed by early modernist architect Berlage, before the city hosted the Olympic Games in 1928.
